Introduction

History

This Department covers various aspects of science dealing with marine biological resources and their relationship with the environment. It was established as the Department of Fishing Technology in 1953 and has undergone changes in name and direction several times. Our name was changed to Fisheries in 1964, Fisheries Science in 1993, and finally the present name in 2002. In addition to undergraduate studies, we have offered a master degree graduate program since 1973, then doctorate degree program since 1987. Our aims are to inspire students, via the undergraduate and graduate curricula, to effectively develop research programs blending basic with applied marine science to achieve sustainable utilization of biological resources.

Development
1.Fisheries Biology and Management: Focusing on assessment of biological resources in order to sustain the fisheries management. To expand our knowledge on
biology of fisheries targeted species and to improve our ability in stock assessment to develop and manage sustainable fisheries management with responsible fishing
   technology.

2.Environmental Biology and Conserving Biodiversity: Concentrating on the interrelationship between biodiversity and marine environment. Through our understanding
of the environmental impact on marine resources and biodiversity to assess marine biological resources and conserve biodiversity.

Graduation Requirements & Program Curriculum

Students who receive M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in our department or in various fields such as Fisheries Management, Fisheries Oceanography, Marine Population Dynamics, Development of Conservation Fishing Gear, Fisheries Policy and Administration etc.

Degree programs:
1.Bachelor of Science (BSc) - 133 credits are required (86 general requirements plus 47 electives). 4 to 8 weeks of on-boat training is required during the summer
   recess.
Students are required to major at least one of the following programs

  1. Fisheries Science Program: courses required including Biological oceanography, Fisheries biology, Fisheries technology, Remote sensing & global climate change, Biological resource management, Fisheries policy & management.
  2. Environmental Biology Program: courses required including Environmental biology, Marine ecology, Marine biology, Ichthyology, Environmental chemistry, Ecotoxicology, Coastal pollution & management, GIS, Conservation biology.

2.Master of Science (MSc) - 36 credits are required (6 credits for thesis, 4 for seminar, 0 for Academic Research Ethics, 3 for Basic Chinese,3 for Advanced Chinese and
   20 for electives).

3.Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - 36 credits are required (8 credits for thesis, 4 for seminar, 0 for Academic Research Ethics,3 for Basic Chinese,3 for Advanced
   Chinese and 18 for electives).

Emphasis in undergraduate program is on agriculture and life science and on their biological and physical underpinnings. We also introduce students to technology associated with the areas of food science and biotechnology. Graduate students focus on integrating and broadening basic food science knowledge as well as developing critical thinking and independent research skills.
